PR & Citizenship Update — May 30, 2026

Saturday, May 30, 2026

IRCC launched the In-Canada Workers Initiative (TR-to-PR pathway), a one-time program targeting up to 33,000 temporary workers for accelerated PR processing in 2026 and 2027, prioritizing those in rural communities for at least two years who applied through PNP, AIP, RCIP, FCIP, caregiver pilots, or the Agri-Food Pilot — applicants do not need to take any action as IRCC will select from existing inventories.

As of May 2026, new PR cards are being issued in approximately 40 days and renewals in approximately 28 days, making PR card processing one of the fastest-performing immigration categories.

Canadian citizenship grant processing currently takes approximately 13 months (improved from 14 months as of March 2026), with approximately 320,000+ applicants awaiting a decision.

What You Should Do

  • If you applied for PR through PNP, AIP, RCIP, FCIP, caregiver pilots, or the Agri-Food Pilot and have lived in a smaller community for at least two years, you may be eligible for accelerated processing under the In-Canada Workers Initiative — no application is needed, but confirm your IRCC account contact details are current at canada.ca/ircc-portal so IRCC can reach you.
  • If you need a new or renewed PR card, current processing times are approximately 40 days (new) and 28 days (renewal) — apply at canada.ca/pr-card and track your application through your IRCC online account.
  • If you are planning to apply for Canadian citizenship, factor in the current ~13-month processing time and the backlog of 320,000+ applicants — submit Form CIT 0002 (Application for Canadian Citizenship) as early as possible at canada.ca/citizenship-application and ensure your physical presence calculation meets the 1,095-day requirement before applying.

Topics Covered

Citizenship Processing Improvements: Citizenship grant processing improved from ~14 months to ~13 months as of March 2026, but the backlog remains large at 320,000+ applicants. Citizenship certificate processing also modestly improved to ~10 months despite a growing backlog of ~51,000 applications.

PR Card Processing Efficiency: As of May 2026, new PR cards are being issued in ~40 days and renewals in ~28 days, representing one of the best-performing processing categories across all IRCC programs.
