Canada's 2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan targets 380,000 new permanent residents annually, with economic immigrants making up the largest share (244,700 in 2026), followed by family class (81,000) and refugees/humanitarian (56,200).
During Citizenship Week (April 12-18, 2026), over 80 ceremonies were held across Canada, welcoming approximately 6,000 new citizens from 40 countries.
Citizenship ceremonies are most commonly held virtually via video conference; applicants receive an invitation from IRCC specifying the format, date, and requirements including taking the oath in English or French and signing the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship (OAC) form.
What You Should Do
- If you have received a citizenship ceremony invitation, confirm the format (virtual or in-person) and practice the Oath of Citizenship in your preferred language (English or French) before the scheduled date. If you need to change the format, contact IRCC using the details in your invitation.
- If attending a virtual citizenship ceremony, ensure you are seated during the oath recitation and have a stable video connection. After the ceremony, watch for your official Citizenship Certificate to be issued as proof of citizenship.
- If you need an accommodation or oath waiver for your citizenship ceremony, submit your request to IRCC before your ceremony date. Details are available at canada.ca/citizenship.
