PR & Citizenship Update — September 3, 2026

Thursday, September 3, 2026

Canada held over 80 citizenship ceremonies during Citizenship Week (April 12–18, 2026), welcoming approximately 6,000 new citizens from 40 countries.

Canada's 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan targets 380,000 new permanent residents annually, with the largest share going to economic immigrants (244,700 in 2026), followed by family class (81,000) and refugees/humanitarian (56,200).

Citizenship ceremonies are conducted either virtually (most common) or in person; applicants receive an invitation from IRCC detailing the format, date, and requirements including signing the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship (OAC) form.

What You Should Do

  • If you have applied for citizenship and are awaiting your ceremony invitation, monitor your IRCC account and email regularly. Once invited, confirm your ceremony format (virtual or in-person) and request a change if needed by contacting IRCC directly.
  • Before your citizenship ceremony, practice the Oath of Citizenship in English or French (your choice). If you require accommodations or an oath waiver, submit your request to IRCC before your ceremony date.
  • If you are planning your immigration pathway under the 2026–2028 Levels Plan, review the annual targets by category at canadavisa.com or canada.ca to understand how many spots are available in your program (e.g., economic: 244,700; family: 81,000) and plan your application timing accordingly.
