Family Sponsorship Update — May 18, 2026

Monday, May 18, 2026

As of March 2026, spousal sponsorship processing times are approximately 15 months for outland applications and 24 months for inland applications per IRCC's official figures, with Quebec-destined applications taking significantly longer due to provincial processing requirements.

PR card processing has improved significantly: new PR cards are now issued in an average of 54 days (down 8 days from late January 2026) and renewals in 27 days, with IRCC attributing gains to a 2024–25 hiring surge and advanced analytics.

Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) wait times have declined as of February 2026, though family class processing overall continues to face lingering delays.

What You Should Do

  • If you are sponsoring a spouse from outside Canada (outland), use IRCC's processing time tool at ircc.canada.ca/english/information/times to confirm the current 15-month estimate before planning travel, employment changes, or housing arrangements.
  • If you are sponsoring a spouse from inside Canada (inland), apply for an open work permit alongside the sponsorship application — inland applicants are eligible for a work permit that typically processes in 4–6 months, allowing your spouse to work while the PR application is reviewed.
  • If your PR card is expiring, apply for renewal now — renewal times are currently down to approximately 27 days. Apply through your secure IRCC account at ircc.canada.ca before your card expires to avoid travel disruptions.
  • If you are destined for Quebec under spousal sponsorship, contact a regulated immigration consultant about Quebec's separate provincial processing step under the Canada–Quebec Accord, as Quebec-destined applications take considerably longer than the national average.
