Family Sponsorship Update — September 7, 2026

Monday, September 7, 2026

IRCC processing times for family sponsorship applications vary and are not guaranteed — applicants from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda may face longer delays due to temporary special measures in place.

Spouses and partners waiting on a PR application can apply for a visitor visa and, if approved, an open work permit (OWP) upon arriving in Canada while their PR is being processed.

As of September 23, 2022, spousal/partner/dependent child sponsorship applications must be submitted online; paper applications are only available as an accommodation for those with disabilities.

What You Should Do

  • Check current IRCC processing times for your specific sponsorship type (spouse/partner, parents/grandparents) at https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html — select your application type and location for a personalized estimate.
  • If you are sponsoring a spouse or partner and they are outside Canada, advise them to apply for a visitor visa as soon as the PR application is submitted so they can later apply for an Open Work Permit (OWP) upon arrival. Instructions are at canada.ca under 'Sponsor your spouse, partner or child: After you apply.'
  • If your sponsored family member receives a biometrics request letter, ensure they attend a biometric collection site within 30 days of the letter date, bringing the letter and their passport.
  • Keep your contact and application information up to date using IRCC's web form (not by mail) to avoid processing delays. Log in to your IRCC portal to make any changes.
  • If you live in Quebec and cannot currently submit an undertaking application to MIFI, monitor your email, portal, and mail regularly — your PR application will remain on hold until MIFI approval is received.
  • If you cannot apply online and need an alternate format (paper, braille, large print) for the IMM 5289 application package, email IRCC.PRPortalALTRequest-DemandeALTPortailRP.IRCC@cic.gc.ca or call 1-888-242-2100 (Canada only).

Topics Covered

Spousal Sponsorship Processing Improvements: IRCC continues to allow sponsored spouses and partners to apply for visitor visas and open work permits while their PR application is in progress, providing a pathway to work in Canada during processing. Online applications remain mandatory since September 2022.

Parents and Grandparents Program Regional Disparities: Quebec-based sponsors face an additional processing layer requiring MIFI undertaking approval before IRCC can finalize parents' and grandparents' PR applications, creating potential delays for this group.
