Express Entry Update — October 1, 2026

Thursday, October 1, 2026

On September 29, 2026, IRCC held draw #446 for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), issuing 2,000 invitations at a CRS cutoff of 518 — the third consecutive drop since the August peak of 523.

A separate category-based draw (#444) on September 16 targeted Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience, issuing only 250 invitations at a much lower CRS of 389 for those with NOC Major Group 00 experience.

IRCC has now issued 131,715 invitations across 58 draws in 2026, with CEC-specific draws accounting for 55,250 of that total; IRCC continues its pattern of pairing a PNP draw with a CEC draw within 24–48 hours.

What You Should Do

  • Check your current CRS score against the latest CEC cutoff of 518 at canada.ca/express-entry. If you are within 10–15 points, focus on boosting your score (e.g., retake IELTS, secure a job offer, or get a provincial nomination) before the next expected draw in mid-October 2026.
  • If you work in a senior management role under NOC Major Group 00 (e.g., senior government managers, senior managers in financial or health services), verify you have at least 12 months of full-time Canadian work experience in the last 3 years and ensure your Express Entry profile is active — the category-based draw for this group had a low CRS threshold of 389.
  • If your Express Entry profile was submitted before February 13, 2026 at 20:48:08 UTC and you have a CEC-eligible CRS score at or above 518, confirm your profile is still active and up to date at ircc.canada.ca to remain eligible for future CEC draws.
  • Review the full 2026 draw history at canadavisa.com/express-entry-invitations-to-apply-issued.html to identify which category-based draws have occurred and whether your occupation or profile type has been targeted.

Topics Covered

CRS Cutoff Trends: The CEC draw on September 29 set a cutoff of 518, the third consecutive decline from the August high of 523, suggesting a gradual easing of CEC thresholds in fall 2026.

Category-Based Selection System: IRCC issued a category-based draw on September 16 specifically for Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience (NOC Major Group 00), with only 250 ITAs issued at a CRS of 389 — far below general draw thresholds.

How these topics connect

  • Candidates should not evaluate their CRS competitiveness against a single benchmark — a score of 420 is uncompetitive for CEC draws but highly viable for French-language draws, and a score of 169 was sufficient for the Physicians category, illustrating how category-based selection has fundamentally fragmented what it means to be 'competitive' in Express Entry.

  • The dramatic range in CRS cutoffs (169 for Physicians to 802 for PNP) is not random volatility but a structural outcome of the category-based system; candidates should assess their scores relative to their specific eligible category rather than the overall pool.

  • The wide variation in CRS cutoffs reflects Canada's strategic shift toward targeted selection, where occupation-specific needs drive dramatically different entry requirements.
