Work Permits Update — April 11, 2026
Saturday, April 11, 2026
LMIA-exempt work permit targets increased significantly to 170,000 in 2026, a 32% increase from previous plans, while LMIA-based permits decreased to 60,000
The deadline for open work permits under the TR to PR pathway has been extended until December 31, 2026
Canada is clearly prioritizing LMIA-exempt pathways under the International Mobility Program over traditional LMIA-based routes
What You Should Do
- If eligible for LMIA-exempt categories (IEC, intra-company transfers, CUSMA, etc.), apply through these pathways instead of LMIA-based routes
- If you applied under the 2021 TR to PR pathway and are still waiting, apply for an open work permit extension before December 31, 2026
- Check eligibility for International Mobility Program categories at canada.ca as these now represent the majority of work permit opportunities
