Study Permits Update — October 15, 2026

Thursday, October 15, 2026

As of July 24, 2026, IRCC updated officer instructions to require financial scrutiny of ALL study permit applicants — not just those from 'high-risk' countries — including mandatory review of funding amounts and sources.

Proof of funds requirements have been extended: officers now expect 6 months of bank statements (up from 4 months), including the month prior to application, and renewal applicants must show funds sufficient for the first year following renewal.

A 2026 PAL/TAL rule change quietly eased attestation letter requirements for joint and graduate programs, and IRCC's multi-year reform roadmap continues with milestones expected in Spring and Fall 2026.

What You Should Do

  • If applying for a new Canadian study permit, prepare at least 6 months of bank statements (including the month before your application date) showing sufficient funds to cover your full program — not just the first year. Upload these to your IRCC online account at ircc.canada.ca before submitting.
  • If renewing a study permit, be ready to demonstrate funds specifically for the first year following your renewal date. Review the updated officer instructions at canada.ca ('Study permits: Assessing the application', last updated July 24, 2026) to understand what officers will be checking.
  • If you are applying for a joint or graduate program, verify whether your program qualifies for the updated PAL/TAL exemption before submitting. Check the current IRCC study permit requirements at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit.html.
  • Ensure all sources of funding (personal savings, family support, scholarships) are clearly documented with supporting employment and financial records. Officers are now required to verify sources in all cases — vague or undocumented fund sources are more likely to trigger refusals.
