PR & Citizenship Update — July 6, 2026
Monday, July 6, 2026
Canada launched the In-Canada Workers Initiative, a one-time program to fast-track up to 33,000 temporary workers to permanent residence in 2026–2027, prioritizing workers who already have a pending PR application through specific programs (PNP, AIP, RCIP, FCIP, Caregiver pilots, Agri-Food Pilot) and have lived in a smaller community for at least 2 years.
IRCC confirmed applicants do not need to take any action — the department will select eligible files from existing inventories automatically.
IRCC issued 112,600 permanent residence decisions between January and March 2026, indicating strong processing output early in the year.
What You Should Do
- If you have a pending PR application through PNP, AIP, RCIP, FCIP, Caregiver pilots, or the Agri-Food Pilot and have lived in a smaller Canadian community for 2+ years, check that your contact information and mailing address are up to date in your IRCC account at canada.ca/ircc so IRCC can reach you — no separate application is required for the In-Canada Workers Initiative.
- If you are waiting on a qualifying PR application under the above programs, check whether you are eligible for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) to maintain work authorization while your PR is processed. Apply through your IRCC online account at canada.ca/ircc before your current work permit expires.
- Review the May 4, 2026 IRCC press release at cicnews.com (linked in sources) for the official list of targeted programs and any updates to the In-Canada Workers Initiative eligibility criteria.
