PR & Citizenship Update — July 2, 2026
Thursday, July 2, 2026
Canada's In-Canada Workers Initiative (TR-to-PR pathway) is fast-tracking PR applications for up to 33,000 temporary workers in 2026–2027, targeting those already in IRCC's inventory who applied through specific programs (PNP, AIP, RCIP, FCIP, Caregiver pilots, Agri-Food Pilot) and have lived in a smaller community for at least 2 years.
IRCC issued 112,600 permanent residence decisions in Q1 2026 (January–March) and welcomed 285,500 new citizens between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, signaling strong processing performance.
Over 80 citizenship ceremonies were held during Citizenship Week (April 12–18, 2026), welcoming approximately 6,000 new citizens from 40 countries.
What You Should Do
- If you applied for PR through PNP, AIP, RCIP, FCIP, Caregiver pilots, or the Agri-Food Pilot and have lived in a smaller Canadian community for at least 2 years, check your IRCC online account at canada.ca/ircc-account to confirm your application status — IRCC says no action is needed, but verifying your file is current and complete can prevent delays.
- If you are waiting on a PR application under one of the six targeted programs, confirm your mailing address and contact details are up to date in your IRCC account (canada.ca/ircc-account) so IRCC can reach you as part of the fast-track processing.
- If you are eligible for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) while your PR application is pending under one of the targeted programs, apply through the IRCC portal at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/extend-permit/bridging-open-work-permit.html before your current work permit expires to maintain legal work status.
- If you are tracking citizenship application timelines, note that IRCC processed 285,500 new citizens between April 2025 and March 2026 — check current processing times at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/become-canadian-citizen/apply.html to estimate your wait.
