PR & Citizenship Update — May 21, 2026

Thursday, May 21, 2026

On May 4, 2026, IRCC announced the In-Canada Workers Initiative, which will accelerate PR processing for up to 33,000 workers in smaller communities over 2026–2027 by fast-tracking existing applications under specific regional and pilot programs — not through a new Express Entry stream.

As of January 2026, new PR cards are being issued in approximately 18 days, while PR card renewals continue at a similarly fast pace, according to IRCC's January 2026 processing time data.

IRCC's processing times tool (updated weekly at canada.ca) remains the authoritative source for current timelines; processing times can vary based on completeness, verification needs, and application volume.

What You Should Do

  • If you are a worker in a smaller Canadian community with a pending PR application under a regional program (e.g., Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, Atlantic Immigration Program), contact IRCC via canada.ca/ircc-contact to confirm whether your application falls under the In-Canada Workers Initiative announced May 4, 2026, which could significantly shorten your wait.
  • If you need a new or renewed PR card, check current processing times at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html. As of January 2026, new PR cards are being issued in approximately 18 days.
  • Check IRCC's processing times tool weekly at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html, as times are updated every week and can change based on application volumes.
