PR & Citizenship Update — May 4, 2026
Monday, May 4, 2026
Citizenship grant processing improved to 13 months as of March 2026 and is now at its fastest pace since late 2025, with the application queue shrinking for the first time this year as of April 2026.
Canada's TR-to-PR fast-track (In-Canada Workers Initiative) is targeting at least 20,000 workers for PR in 2026 and up to 33,000 total across 2026-2027, focused on PNP, Atlantic Immigration Program, community pilot, caregiver pilot, and Agri-Food Pilot applicants already in existing inventories.
The 2026-2028 Levels Plan maintains stabilized permanent resident admission targets while reducing temporary resident arrivals, with economic immigration remaining the top priority.
What You Should Do
- If you submitted a citizenship application and are tracking your wait time, check the official IRCC processing time tool at canada.ca/check-processing-times — citizenship grants are currently estimated at 13 months and improving.
- If you are a temporary worker already in Canada through the PNP, Atlantic Immigration Program, Agri-Food Pilot, Caregiver Pilot, or a community immigration pilot, log into your IRCC secure account to check if your application has been selected for accelerated processing under the In-Canada Workers Initiative — IRCC says no new action is required.
- If you are a US H-1B visa holder interested in Canada's accelerated PR pathway (announced in the 2025 federal budget), monitor canada.ca/immigration for official program launch details, as no open intake has been confirmed yet.
- If you are a temporary resident who has NOT yet applied through an established PR program, begin researching eligible pathways now at canada.ca/permanent-residence — the TR-to-PR fast-track is not a new open application portal and will not help those who haven't already applied.
