Family Sponsorship Update — June 29, 2026

Monday, June 29, 2026

As of February 2026, family sponsorship processing times dropped compared to January 2026, with Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) applications seeing the most notable decreases.

Spousal/partner sponsorship outside Canada (outside Quebec) is running approximately 15–16 months as of mid-2026, while inland spousal sponsorship averages about 12 months.

Parent and grandparent sponsorship continues to face longer waits than spousal cases due to annual intake caps and high application volumes.

What You Should Do

  • Check the current processing time for your specific family sponsorship category (spousal, PGP, etc.) directly at ircc.canada.ca/english/information/times/index.asp — times are updated regularly and your category's wait time may have changed.
  • If you are an inland spousal sponsorship applicant, confirm whether you are eligible for an Open Work Permit during processing — review eligibility and apply through your IRCC secure account at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/account.html.
  • Log into your IRCC secure account at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/account.html regularly to monitor your application status, as processing time estimates are averages and not guarantees.
  • If sponsoring parents or grandparents, verify you meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirement for three consecutive tax years before submitting — review income thresholds at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/family-sponsorship/sponsor-parents-grandparents/eligibility.html.
